By that token, CLEARLY you’re a 45 year old, fat, balding pedophile who lives in his mom’s basement with her 8 cats. With mustard stains on your NASCAR shirt and an aversion to natural light.
BC isn’t going to fire BC; nor is he trading Ford. Get use to it. Jose will be a Hawk or a Blazer or something else by next year and Mitchell will at least get 1 more year…MLSE isn’t paying 2 coaches for 3 years, isn’t happening.
I would take you one on one any day of the week. As much as you are on Joses jock, it would be hard for you to even run.
If he’ll get at least 1 year more, by your count, you’re saying they’ll pay 2 coaches for 2 years. What’s one more year, to avoid declining ticket sales and TV deals? Sportsnets gone. See the empty seats last Fridays game? A late season position jostling, Friday night game too (albeit Charlotte).
Coaches don’t count against the cap, and thats enough to protect the investment.
(Deal. I’m bringing cameras and you’re being youtubed though.)
Here is how bad Charlotte is; I didn’t even go to the game because I FORGOT. I was WAY too stoked about the Jays home opener to remember the Bobcats were in town.
I also have a theory of why they are losing; but it will get proved right or wrong very soon.
Is this Morris Peterson running the site? Is that why you are so anxious? Or better yet; is this TheDoctor or Cyrus from RealGM …. that would be extraordinary. (note, if this was Mo Pete: if he still didn’t like Mitchell so much that he was running this site …… priceless. The “Where it Happens” parody commercial would be excellent.)
By one token, I know nothing about basketball because I created this site. A crass generalization at best, seeing as I go to some lengths to voice the basis of my opinion. (vs the unintelligent ’sam sucks’ chants found everywhere. And, no I’ve never been on Real GM btw.)
Yet, on the same comment board, you admit Sam might have at “least 1 more year”, and that too, only because MLSE can’t fire him for financial reasons.
Which only means you at least partially concur with my stance that he’s not a good coach for this team. Else you’d hold on to the polar opposite stance that his coaching has been meritorious to keeping him here for years. (An assertion which would undermine your credibility even tenfolds lower, than your preposterous ‘Jose to the Hawks/Blazers’ drivel from earlier on).
Come back in a year, - you can take over the site, once you’re done fence-sitting and playing fiscally conscious CFO for the cash-strapped MLSE.
(Lemme guess, if you were American you voted in Dubya for a second term, because you didn’t think there was a chance he’d lose the election.)
Sound rationale. I’m probably done communicating with you, being that I’m partial to logic.
You just compared what George W has done to a nation to that which “Smitch” did to a team. One won Coach of the Year less then 1 calender year ago….the other stole one election and had the good fortune of the Dems screwing up the other. One led his team to an Atlantic division title; the other led his country to a war he couldn’t win. One is in goofy car commercials, the other has over seen the oil prices sky rocket.
You have officially hit the bottom of the barrel trying to defend your baseless point.
Wow…Season Ticket Holder obviously just holds his tickets so he can watch the DancePak…not the game. Let’s get one thing straight about the Coach of the Year thing. Sam was the benefactor of a team that hit their stride and began playing excellent ball…knockin’ down “shatts”…period! Please don’t try and convince people that he “led” them to a title…it’s a ridiculous notion. Anyone who knows anything about b-ball can see what his substitution schemes are like. It’s like they’re predetermined before tip off and don’t change regardless of who’s playing well that night. Anyone who knows the game can see how severely outcoached he is on any given night. There is a game within the game that is played by the coaches. When the Raps are getting their asses handed to them watch closely…very rarely do they switch up their offense or defense until it’s far too late. You watch real NBA coaches and they adjust within the game. They will change their offenses based upon what the other coach is throwing at them on the defensive end. Sam is a dud!
This site is classic, and that video game picture is so funny.
I do have to say something though. Some of you have good points on Mitchell. I question his subs, his starters, his guys on the bench (wish I saw Humphries get more minutes). He was voted the worst coach, and voted the best coach. He falls somewhere between. Maybe you can’t say he led that team, but he was definitely a part of it. Give credit where it’s due. When the Raptors go deeper than anticipated in the playoffs this year, I hope all of you enjoy the taste of your own feet in your mouths. Most of you are pretty funny, very funny actually. But I wish I knew some of you personally so that I could heckle you as the Raps surprise is in the postseason. There are so many positive things to focus on with this team and I think you guys are probably hard core Leaf fans that need something to complain about. LET’S GO RAPTORS!!! But then again, ‘we just didn’t make any shatts….’
Your opinion is definitely an opposing, yet valid one. My/our official position:
“FSM isnt about a vendetta or hatred. Sam Mitchell’s rise from an average basketball player to respectable Coach of the Year, is an encouraging testament to perseverance and dedication. A player’s coach, he commands respect for the dues he’s paid and is generally a positive influence in the locker room.
However, it’s this site’s (mine) and many other’s school of thought, that he has a definite ceiling as far as accomplishment. Tactically, motivationally and for a general ‘feel’ for the game, Sam lacks…and for this lacking, he handicaps the Raptor’s progress and negates some of Bryan Colangelo’s brilliance.”
See Colangelo’s most recent comments and I think it’s clear he shares the same sentiment.
Another important point is that I think it doesn’t matter if the Raptors win a series (or two? is that imaginable) in the playoffs or not. I don’t think they can legitimately be contenders if Sam is their coach - he was embarrassed last year in the playoffs. (remember the zone that stifled us? and mikki moore’s dominance of chris bosh?)
Lastly, the “fire sam mitchell” crowd are definitely die-hard raptor fans who VERY often hear the opposing viewpoint - Sam backers and the mainstream media are not shy about voicing their popular position. nonetheless, thanks for the comments, keep em coming! [fingers crossed/raindancing/haitian voodoo for the turnaround]
I do hear ya. The point of Sam Mitchell having a ceiling is plausible. But then again, every good player, and every good coach, understands their limitations and does whatever they can to grow. I actually question Sam much more this year than last and that’s not because of the record of the Raps. I’m disappointed that it’s the end of the season and we are still tinkering around with our lineup and I argue that our guys don’t understand their roles on the court. Sam as the coach, should understand how to utilize his players in the best situations based on their style of play. It seems to me that Sam is still confused as hell. Only thing is, although the Raps may have digressed a little this year, is that the Raps continue to be on a path of success. Even if Mitchell is not the ideal coach for our team, at least we don’t have a coach who is completely ruining our team. (This is arguable I know…) Bryan Colangelo is nails. I am sure he is well aware of all areas of the organization which need improvement (ie. coaching). If the Raps get outcoached in the playoffs we may see something happen sooner than later. Last year was disappointing. We had injuries and fatigue in the pg situation, but we were outcoached. But I think Mitchells contract is going to be respected and any desicion to cut the chord will come at the end of his contract. I’m not as much as a Sam backer, other than a passionate Raps fan who wants the most practical decisions made for the team. Enjoy the Piston’s game today. I love the site.
Joe: A good point about the recognizing weaknesses. Yet, I haven’t got the sense that Sam understands the need to evolve, beyond his causal linkage between wins and ’shatts’. X’s and O’s, defensive assignments, offensive schemes - they’re all seemingly after thoughts. Even super-fan Chuck recently quipped “Are they even running an offense here?”
Perhaps its Sam’s rote answer in order to blanket dismiss the media but more likely, its more of his surprising know-it-all arrogance as a coach (”you guys don’t understand the game…”) - the opposite mentality from his hard working attitude as a player.
I still laugh at this whole shatts thing… And I do remember hearing that line about running an offense. You could be right. Gotta story… K, Leafs game, friend had tickets, last home game… against Ottawa. I’m there in the concessions and Smitch is walking in front of me. I go up to him, and I’m like ‘Mr. Mitchell, I hope you enjoy your night’. All he does is simply turn his head and says yeah. That’s it. I can understand the guy wants his privacy. But come on… Pretty arrogant. I wish I told him that he should have been watching videotape.
Anyhow, let me draw an analogy if I may. And I understand, it may be a crappy one, maybe not. Let’s say you are Sam’s coach, and he’s running the 100m race. K, he’s not ahead of the pack, and he’s not behind the pack. Do you take him right off the track? Or do you let him finish?
I would say let the guy do his job even though at this point, your opinions on him are all valid. Defensive assignments kill me. It is so poor. For me, I like Humphries. I am not suggesting his talent is highly underrated, but the guy is dedicated on his defensive assignments. Sometimes he gets out of position, but then he runs back to where he’s got to go. He plays with a lot of intensity as a defender and it bugs me that he doesn’t see as many minutes as I think he deserves. I say, whenever the Raps are down by 10 or up by 10, throw in the Hump for a shift. They did this in a game recently against the Hornets and he came close to having a double double and was a key part in the game which prevented the Raps from a complete embarrassment. He only started to see playing time in the 3rd quarter too.
I would stay quiet and let him finish the race in the middle of the pack, but have a hitman waiting for him at the finish line and a replacement in line to prep for the draft.
Joe, as to Hump, the guy does his job and I truly respect his attitude and the energy he brings to the floor. He can’t start in a top tier team though, he hasn’t got the skills, but he can be a valid bench player, and a pretty useful one in certain situations. Still, we all know Mitchell chooses who plays randomly, therefore you’d see him play good minutes once and sitting on the bench next time, just like that. His PT could probably be more rational.
And yes, when you met Smitch you should have told him to get back (back? does he ever? :)) to watch videotapes. But again, “it doesn’t matter who you play, we just gotta get back to play and make shatts” (quoting by memory)…
“When the Raptors go deeper than anticipated in the playoffs this year, I hope all of you enjoy the taste of your own feet in your mouths”.
LOL…
Another point to bring up is how Jason Kapono was used this year. First off i’m not a huge Kapono fan. However, he played by far his best basketball of the season (suprisingly on D also) against the Magic but it was an ACCIDENT. What I mean by that is if the Raps hadn’t been blown put in the first qtr of game 1 I bet he doesn’t even see the floor until late in the second qtr, possibly the second half.
Overall, there was never a time all year where he was properly used on the floor. How is that possible? We are talking about the best shooter in the NBA. How can a coach not utilize this kind of talent? Especially for a coach who only cares about getting SHATTS off…
It’s rediculous. Run a two-man game with Bosh and Kapono. Extend Kapono beyond the 3-point line close to Bosh and they can give and go for a 3-pointer if the double team comes to bosh. If it doesn’t, Bosh probably doesn’t get doubled as much becuse of the threat of the Kapono shot. If the pass comes out to Kapono and teh D adjusts there is a one swing pass to Jose for a wide-open shot…
It drives me nuts that in the Raptor offense, Kapono is always in the “corner pocket” (R.I.P. Chuck) with bosh on the complete opposite side of the offensive floor for post ups. In essence, the BEST 3-point option (in the NBA)is 3 passes away from the ONLY PLAYER who can demand a double team (Bosh).
*** I’m not saying Kapono is the type of player I would feel comfortable playing significant minutes at all times. The point I am trying to make is Smitch wasn’t even able to utilize his offensive talents which is laughable. (Remember there was a period in the season where Kapono didn’t take a single 3-point shot for about a month. What kind of offense is that Smitch lovers?!?!?!
